My name is John Van
and I started this site.
My forebears originated in the border area of the provinces Groningen and Friesland in the Netherlands. The first known from the area are Jannes Willems and his wife Wytske Koenes around 1680. Following the European tradition the first names of their offspring changed to their parents last names. Thus the son of Jannes Willems became Willem Jans and his son became Jans or Jannes Willems. During the time of Napoleon around the year 1811 permanent last names came into law and the name van der Molen was added. Thus the following Willem Jans became Willem Jans van der Molen.
The grave stone of my 6th generations’ forefather Willem Jans (passed away in 1795) can be found in the floor in front of the pulpit of the twelfth Century St Vitus church in Doezem Groningen. The medallion of this grave stone is proudly displayed on this home page. A phote of a mill simmilar to the one in this medallion can be found in our photos.
My parental name is van der Molen. Due to the fact that my children were adopted and born in Canada is one reason we shortened our legal name to Van. Another (unknown) Jan van der Molen gave us much unwanted grief with legal authorities was another reason. Although our children and grand children are from European, Mexican North American and Oriental background they all consider their heritage to be Dutch.
As more and more of my wife's family names were added I have included them in this site and therefore changed the name to "Van and van Dijk website".
